Using Fermented Food Waste In Planters

We received a question about other ways to use the materials from a bokashi bucket, other than burying in the soil. Several years ago (almost 20 years ago now!!!), EcoPure Magazine published an issue on recycling kitchen garbage. Unfortunately, the magazine is out of print and there are only a few copies floating around...fortunately, I have one!  The pictures below are from page 9 of that issue. They show exactly how to mix fermented food wastes into planters. This is great for people who do not have an area where they can bury food wastes. It does take about twice the time for the materials to break down and be ready for planting, but does offer an alternate solution.


1. Select a planter with drain holes.

2. Use either loam or good quality soil.

3. Add 1/4th well drained Fermented Food Waste.

4. Mix well with the soil. Fermentation is faster with better mixing.

5. Cover with an even layer of soil and flatten (soil mound should be slightly higher since it tends to sink).
6.  Cover with plastic bag to keep from getting wet for at least 14 days (avoid putrefaction/rotting).

7. Appearance of white mold doesn't indicate failure. It is the result of breeding filamentous fungi from the EM-1.
8. After one month, it's ready for use.

9. You can grow great flowers or vegetables and there is no need for fertilizer.

The Environmental Importance of Water Conservation

Learning about the water cycle conditions us to think of water as a renewable resource. Even wasted water will eventually evaporate and come back in the form of precipitation. The realities of our environment are far different, however, and the conservation of fresh water is one of the most important issues facing our fragile planet. Organic Animal Feeding Options

Organic Farming with Natural Animal Feed


Organic farms face a two-pronged problem: ensuring that their livestock is raised without the influence of potentially harmful chemical exposure, and ensuring that the animal feed that they purchase has been through the same rigorous oversight.

On farms across the nation, chickens, pigs, cattle and other animals are fed a diet of antibiotic-laden and GMO grains. In many cases, these grains are not even part of the animal’s natural diet; for example, most U.S. cattle and chicken live on a corn or soy-rich diet, despite their inability to fully digest the popular grains.

Fortunately, the demand for organic food stock has led to a proportional demand for all-natural animal feed, and the supply has risen to meet that demand. Organic alfalfa, grass hay and other natural food sources are readily available; by choosing a provider that you trust, there is no need to depend on chemically “enriched” or pesticide treated livestock feed. Probiotic Livestock Feed Supplements

Probiotics, in the form of a livestock feed supplement, are a wonderful addition to your animals’ diet. Keeping your animals free of harsh antibiotics and pest treatments requires looking to natural solutions for bolstering their immune system and general well-being. The most direct method of accomplishing this through proper nutrition and by encouraging the growth of helpful bacterial colonies that aid in digestion and directly compete with disease-causing microbes.

In addition to including microbial supplements to your livestock’s diet, microbial inoculants like EM-1 can be utilized to control animal odor, sanitize living spaces, and leverage beneficial microbes to keep animals healthy both inside and out.
1.  Add Activated EM-1 to animal feed at 1 gallon per 1,000lbs of feed.
2. Add Activated EM-1 to drinking water a 1part AEM to 2,000 parts water.
3. Spray bedding with 1gallon/320 square feet of space. Dilute with just enough water to cover area.
4.  Spray & wash all surfaces of poultry housing with a diluted solution of AEM  in water at a 1:500 ratio.
5. Compost manures by add 1gallon of AEM per 1,000lbs of material (roughly 1 yard). Turn as normal. Compost should be stable and mature (ready to apply) in 45 days.

How to Protect Your Plants from the Cold

We may be almost finished with the first month of 2014, but for many of us the cold temperatures of winter will linger well into March. With that in mind, it’s important to keep your gardens protected from frost and cold temperatures that would otherwise form ice crystals in plant cells and put a damper on your spring gardening plans. Below are a few examples of ways you can help your plants survive the cold, winter months.
  • Mulch will insulate your plants and protect them from experiencing the effects of frozen soil. Frozen soil inhibits a plant’s ability to properly absorb water. If you plan to use mulch, keep it around 2-4” deep.
  • Consider the location of your plants before they are even planted. Fences or rocks can protect nearby plants from heavy winds, and plants near sidewalks can absorb extra heat.
  • Cover your more delicate plants with a blanket or tarp if the weather forecast calls for a short spell of cold days. This should only be done at night so the plants can get as much Sun and air exposure as possible.
  • Think about using raised beds for your plants. Not only will this make covering your plants easier, but it also prevents them from collecting too much cold air as it usually congregates in areas with lower elevation.
  • Pot some of your plants and bring them in from the cold. Just make sure to get them as much sunlight from windows as possible since many may not be indoor plants by nature.
Planning ahead and protecting your plants from cold weather and potential frost will increase the likelihood of your plants’ survival and save you time and headaches.

Roundup and Its Effects on Soil Microbes

Monsanto’s Roundup is an herbicide that has been regularly used since the 1970s to prevent growth of weeds on farmland. While its initial use helped many farmers meet demand and keep a steady supply of crops free from weed growth, weeds have developed a resistance to the herbicide and Roundup’s lasting effect on soil is taking its toll.

According to MotherJones.com, resilient weeds and their evolving resistance to Roundup has forced farmers to resort to what has been deemed a “high toxic pesticide cocktail.” Plants need micronutrients within the soil like iron, calcium, and zinc to grow strong and fend off diseases.
  • Roundup binds to these micronutrients and thus makes them unavailable to plants.
  • In turn, the soil is filled with higher volumes of oxides that plants can’t use to grow, and they become more susceptible to disease through a damaged root structure. 
  • Depending on the soil where Roundup is used, the chemical could degrade in a matter of days or a matter of years.
It is also worth mentioning how Roundup can effect humans - Green Med Info states that concentrations of glyphosate can induce damage of DNA in human cells, while Catalyst Magazine mentions that the most severe of doses can lead to coma or death. Studies also show glyphosate contaminating groundwater used for human consumption.

One might wonder how they can do their part to avoid the harmful effects of Roundup and improve soil health in their homes, community gardens, and more. Remaining vigilant about where your food comes from, encouraging natural microbial growth through Bokashi composting, and resorting to natural ways of weed control are some great ways to take proactive action against Roundup. Catalyst Magazine recommends using home remedies such as white vinegar, rubbing alcohol, boiling water, or essential oils like tea tree, citronella, or clove to safely and effectively combat your weed problems at home.
